OUR HISTORY

The history of the Butler Cubs started out in the neighborhoods where young men would play pick-up games of football and baseball.

In 1937, a group of young men came together and formed the Butler Cubs. They wanted to start a club that would support athletics as well as promote youths and physical fitness. In 1947, the Butler Cubs were officially incorporated as a nonprofit. They were heavily involved in the community as they sponsored many youth teams in basketball, baseball and boxing as well as held many sports camps.

In 1968, the Cubs relocated to a former YMCA building and have been there ever since. The uses of the Cub’s building are multi-faceted as it serves not only as a gym but with renovations of the building’s basement, it also serves as a bingo hall.

The Butler Cubs is also known for their boxing program. It was home to many amateur boxers before they went pro. Ryan Covert, Donovan Malovich, Billy Wolfe, Bob Osterider and Michael McGrady are just a few professional boxers that came out of the Butler Cub’s boxing program.

The Cub’s building is currently undergoing renovations and new amenities are soon to be installed, but much of the history and artifacts of the Cubs are still preserved and available for.
